Two underwater photographers, Tatiana Brouers et jean Loncle, have created the scientific project PRÎSM, in order to observe the evolution of the state of health of the reef around Sainte-Marie island, in Madagascar. Their data contributes to the major global report on the health of corals around the world from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.
To popularize science and share the photos of their expeditions, they created the magazine OCEANA. Through interviews, reports, portfolios, they tell the blue world of Sainte-Marie Island and elsewhere.

Global warming, pollution, erosion, overfishing, ecosystems have a hard life. The PRÎSM (Projet Récif Île Sainte-Marie) emerged from a need to study and monitor the marine environment on the reef around Sainte Marie Island in Madagascar. The goal is to enable its management and protection by the population. In addition to a local partnership with PCADDISM, the association of the 17 villages on the island, the PRÎSM collaborates at the regional level with CORDIO (Coastal Ocean Research and Development in the Indian Ocean) and at the global level with the GCRMN (Global Coral Reef Monitoring Nettork).

Oceana magazine was created on Tatiana’s initiative and supervised by the experience of Jean, a former photojournalist. After 5 years of collecting scientific data for the PRÎSM association on the reef of Sainte-Marie Island, our two photographers wanted to tell the story of the connection that the Malagasy people of this island have with the sea. Born in Madagascar herself, Tatiana was sensitive to this desire to document the different approaches. Each one is unique and exciting.
Since 2024, the magazine has also opened up to stories from elsewhere since our two photographers have decided to share their own photo expeditions in the magazine. In the second edition of December 2024, they offer a portfolio of Raja Ampat, the golden triangle, in Indonesia.
Please note: the magazine is translated into Malagasy, printed and distributed on Sainte-Marie Island.
Tatiana and Jean are the editors-in-chief of Oceana magazine.
Please note: for their underwater photos, Jean and Tatiana do not use a flash, only natural light. To restore the colors, they perform a white balance at the depth of their shots using a white slate.
